Homework Two: Recipe GUI

Please complete this homework by Friday 25th September

[The following is an actual exam question]


A Computing student has written a program which stores and prints recipes. The program has a graphical user Interface (GUI).

(a) Describe how a well designed GUI can help make the program easier to use.
(4 marks)

(b) The data entry screen allows the user to enter the following data about each recipe.
  • The name of the recipe (e.g. Sponge Cake)
  • The number of people the recipe caters for (e.g. 6)
  • A table of ingredients of the recipe with 3 columns
o The name of the ingredient (e.g. flour)
o The quantity required (e.g. 300)
o The units in which the quantity required is measured (e.g. grams)


On a blank screen show a suitable layout for the data entry screen.

Homework One: Device Interfaces

You are to describe the interfaces for five or six different devices, for each device you need to do the following:
  1. Describe main purpose of device
  2. Pick some specific inputs and explain how we communicate with the device
  3. Describe how device communicates what its doing
  4. Give your opinion of interface, explaining why you think what you think (e.g. don't say fiddly explain what is fiddly and why is it compromised)

Welcome to Eric's AS Computing blog

This blog is intended to provide you with information regarding the course and homeworks.


It is hoped that this will compliment the Intranet site we have. The nice thing about blogs is that you can attach your comments to the posts I make. This will allow you to ask questions regarding aspects of a post (i.e. such as querying a homework question).


Please do not start flaming and keep your comments relevant as I don't have in infinite amount of time to read these. If you are in college it would be easier to catch me in workshop or during a lesson.


Anyway any suggestions are welcomed as to how we could further use this blog.
